Test Footage

Our test footage was overall very successful. We have identified the angles and light sources we will use for various scenes and how to create them. We are also aware that when filming it would be better slightly earlier than we thought, possibly when its only just getting dark because it was too dark for the camera to detect a lot of the set at the time we chose. another area of improvement is that we got easily distracted at various times which we need to avoid doing if we are planning on being as time efficient as possible. As well as looking at high key and low key lighting, we also looked at warm and cool toned light sources. We found that high key, cool toned lighting worked well when he first woke up and in the psychiatrists office because it creates a floodlight effect on the scene. However, low key, cool toned lighting was successful in some scenes as it created a false sense of safety. This contrast makes the audience feel on edge as it is not what they are used to. Additionally, we found that the use of candles was effect as both a prop and a light source. As a prop it creates confusion because it is not normal for people to walk around holding a candle. As a light source, it was successful as it creates a flickering effect which creates ambiguity as it disrupts the audience visual of the scene.

Here is the break down of our day:

Focus Group:

Props
"Very atmospheric"
"Reminds me of a haunted house"
This shows our props were successful as the fact they mentioned a "haunted house" shows that they had identified genre conventions within our test footage.

"Now, see, that's pointless. You can't even see what it is. What's the point in that?"
Although the member of our focus group did not like the shot, it did exactly what we had wanted it to and left them wondering what the ambiguous object was. For this reason, although his comment was negative, we successfully created ambiguity in our shots.

Candles
"Good lighting"
"Dangerous"
The fact that this individual assosiated candles with danger is good because it represents the use of conventional factors within our scene. We want to create a sense of danger so will most likely be featuring numerous candles and candlight in our film.

Darkness
"There's a beauty of having darkness with very little light"
Our low key lighting was successful in our shots and has aesthetic qualities about it which is good because it means the viewer will want to look at it more.

Angles
Over The Shoulder
"Gives all the info action without being boring"
"To be fair, that is a good camera angle, I'm not going to lie"
This camera angle features number out times throughout our sequence so it was important that we received positive feedback on it.
Low Angle
"Does nothing for me"
It is good that we can keep this in mind whilst filming our sequence.
Birds eye View
"Someone looking down on you"
"Oppressive view"
Both of these responses imply that the shot makes the viewer fell onesie and uncomfortable. We can use this to our advantage and feature a birds eye view in some of our more tense scenes.
