My Group will be creating an opening sequence for a thriller film as our text. I think this is a good idea because we are all interested in the genre and have developed a lot of background information through analysis of other films. Thrillers have the ability to influence the audiences brains which I like because it gives the audience an adrenaline rush which makes the audience hooked in and interested. It also demands an active audience which I like.
Our opening is a palindromic structure and commences with the main character running through woods. We then have shots of our two characters conversing, the evil psychiatrist and the patient possessing mental illness. We decided this would be an effective structure as it would leave the audience on a cliff hanger which would ensure the audience will want to see how the characters resolve the dilemma and will therefore watch the film.
Our group members will most likely be acting. We chose to do this because it will ensure that effort will be put into making the opening and we wont miss a recording session. Both characters presented in the opening will be Female. One is the schizophrenia patient who is a young adult, roughly 20 years old and the other is the evil psychiatrist who is slightly older. We will hold auditions to see who is most suitable for each role.
We are looking for a particularly dark forest during location scouting. Hollywood forest in Warley is a location that fits this description well. Other locations we will consider are Thorndon Country Park and King George's woods. We are also searching for a location with older chairs, in order to represent the psychiatrists room. Our member's homes are locations that we will consider choosing for these scenes because it will be most practical and constantly available for our use.
Conventions of the Thriller genre that we wish to include in our opening scene are low key lighting, non-diegetic sound, and sudden changes in the angle of shots . We have also chose our sequence to begin in a state of action, because we believe that will grasp the audiences attention. However, we also want to challenge some conventions, for example, we want the antagonist to be unexpected and therefore mess with our audiences heads further.
